Calling all those with a penchant for curiosity and culture, So Frenchy So Chic returns in 2024 with our biggest program to date! For 10+ years, we’ve connected France to Australia through a day-long summer festival celebrating the Art of Living: French contemporary music, gastronomy, fashion, conviviality and lots of Champagne.
More artists to be announced December 8th.
La Femme
More
Led by Marlon Magnée and Sacha Got, French psych-rockers La Femme have spent more than a decade enchanting audiences with their cinematic soundscapes, intriguing melodies and boundless imagination. Inescapable in France, the band boasts numerous gold records, won the equivalent of a French Grammy for their 2013 debut Psycho Tropical Berlin, toured Europe with the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2016 and recently released Paris-Hawaii, a forward-thinking, evocative collection of Hawaiian love songs. They’re currently wrapping a nearly sold-out tour of over 140 dates in more than 25 countries and will play a “best of” repertoire at SFSC 2024 with singers Ysé, Fanny Luzignant and Sam Quealy.
Kill The Pain
More
Uniting the smouldering powers of two formidable chanteuses, Kill The Pain is the dynamite duo of Australian singer-songwriter Phoebe Killdeer (who had an international chart-topping hit with The Avener rework of her 2011 track “The Fade Out Line”) and French vocalist Mélanie Pain (Nouvelle Vague). Their 2023 self-titled debut is a startling showcase of their sweeping talents, taking in swaggering indie rock, jangly psych pop, and soulful, steely electropop. Complemented by hip-shaking guitars and seductive percussion, Killdeer and Pain’s smoky voices and playful chemistry promise to ignite the stage.
Laure Briard
More
Enigmatic, charming and ocean-deep, Gallic singer-songwriter Laure Briard has just released her most optimistic album yet, “Ne pas trop rester bleue”. Inspired by time spent in California’s Joshua Tree, Briard’s take on country is gentle, idiosyncratic and romantic, tinged with psychedelia and soul. It’s the culmination of more than ten years of musical enquiry that has drawn comparisons to Françoise Hardy, Cate le Bon and Aldous Harding.
Malo’
More
Born to a French musician father, effervescent singer-songwriter Malo’ traveled to Australia for the first time as a young teenager, to meet his mother, where his love of French artists such as Serge Gainsbourg collided with his discovery of Australian indie acts such as Angus and Julia Stone. In a full circle moment, Julia Stone featured on Malo’s Pause EP last year, which features gospel, Motown, rock, soul and pop influences. His recent track “Laisse-toi tranquille” was a summer hit on French radio and we can’t wait to welcome his sunny energy at SFSC.
Cécile Lacharme
More
French cellist Cécile Lacharme is a versatile artist with a classical foundation who boldly explores unconventional musical realms. Her journey spans diverse collaborations, from French indie-folk artists like Merryn Jeann to engaging with the New Cambodian Artists in Cambodia's contemporary dance scene. Venturing into solo projects, she combines an electric cello, loop station, and effects pedals, crafting compositions influenced by Philip Glass and Max Richter. Lacharme's music, a fusion of classical and modern, unfolds as a melodic odyssey, conjuring mysterious landscapes bridging East and West.
Colours In The Street
More
Alex Colours, the driving force behind the French pop-rock band Colours in the Street, is a multi-talented artist, singer, and producer. With a rich stage history of nearly 200 concerts worldwide, including China, South Korea, and Australia, Colours is known for unstoppable melodies and polished productions blending pop, rock, and electro influences. Beyond his band, he's a prolific songwriter and collaborator, contributing to global musical works.
Hugo Barriol
More
French singer/songwriter Hugo Barriol's musical journey began busking in Sydney, Australia, before claiming the Metro Music Awards in Paris in 2015. His debut EP, recorded in 2017, produced the hit single "On the Road - Radio Edit" with over 15 million streams. In 2019, his album "Yellow," produced by Ian Grimble, led to over 40 shows and festivals across Europe. Barriol's 2020 "Hey Love" EP, recorded just before lockdown, demonstrated resilience during the pandemic. In 2023, his album "Everywhere/Anywhere" encapsulates Barriol's authentic storytelling, weaving melancholic yet hopeful tales inspired by folk, pop, rock, and indie influences.
We’re playing host to Melbourne and Sydney's finest dining establishments including Frederic, Hotel Gitan, Loulou and Bouillon L'Entrecôte. Expect a curated selection of French classics; oysters, macarons, mitraillettes, mussels, ratatouille, brioches, crepes, chocolate eclairs, steak frites sandwiches, croque monsieurs, almond duck liver parfait macaron and more.
