    SFSC20: Q&A WITH TÉTÉ

    21 October 2019

Having been described as  Ben Harper of France, this Senegal-born Frenchman blends folk, blues, soul, pop, and Chanson Française and is one of the most soulful acts SFSC has had the pleasure of hosting. Having started his career in the clubs and bars of Paris and busking on the corners outside the Metro, Tété is a delight to witness perform live, moving audiences with his soulful tone, goose bump-inducing falsetto and humble but affecting stage presence. We are confident the SFSC audience will fall in love with this self-described troubadour, as many have already – and just to show you exactly how thoughtful, soulful and delightful this artist is, we sat down with Tété to talk about touring Australia, the simple pleasures and he shared with us some summer playlists.

What most excites you about coming back to Australia?

The one thing that excites me the most about coming back to Australia is getting to visit and tour for the 4th time a beautiful country that has given me so much in the past on both a human and musical level. My first time must have been 2008, with Woodford folk festival among others. More followed such as Womadelaide a couple of years back. Plus, for some reason I’ve often toured with Australian musicians in the past, such as Jeff Lang, John Butler or Hein Cooper. Such a treat each time!

It’s your first time playing SFSC, what can our audience expect from your show?

I’d say my music is a blend of folk, soul and chanson Française with subtle blues accents to it. The feedback I get the most is that it’s solar, emotional, easy to sing and clap along to, let alone dance! Can’t wait to be sharing it with SFSC!

We love travelling and adventures, what was your last adventure and if you could road trip anywhere, where would it be?

My last adventure was touring Germany solo, just me and my 4 guitars to introduce my last album (Fauthentique) to the country. I love touring on my own. It can be emotionally challenging at times, but it makes human connections so much stronger along the road. Plus, it keeps me connected to who I am at heart, having started singing as a street busker in the streets of Paris 20 years ago.

What are your simple pleasures in life?

Me and my wife having a glass of wine, smiling silently as we listen to the (not too) distant sound of our kid’s laughter, while some nice French cuisine gently stirs nearby -just make sure you get that little sauce too! [laughs].

Second to that, writing, performing or producing new music in my studio or on stage. Or learning new things basically. Does owning an actual X-wing count?

What is a rule that is meant to be broken?

Keep away from strangers at all cost.

What is the biggest risk you’ve taken?

Leaving my hometown to dwell in Paris 25 years ago, carrying just a guitar and a couple of euros. Can’t believe how lucky I got on this one, looking back.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given (and who gave it to you)?

Once as a kid, I was on vacation at my grandparents’ house. So, I’m watching tv because I’m bored and my grand-pa sees it, turns the thing off and prompts me to go outside and enjoy the sun instead. Then he hands me a bucket and asks me to pluck the weed in our alley way. I do it for 5 minutes, get bored, walk out on it. My grandpa notices and says ‘son, when you choose to do something you do all the way through’. Hadn’t technically chosen to do this at the time but I went back to it and finished the deed regardless. No one talked back to grandpas in those years. Or ever since. Best piece of advice in my life, looking back.

SFSC is all about discovery, can you share three things you discovered lately?

Oh yes recently I’ve discovered great bands such as The Teskey Brothers. Or great writers such as Malcolm Gladwell. Or the Arcachon bay in the southern of France. Comes summertime there’s nothing like it. Beside owning an X-wing…

We’d love to know what’s on your summer playlist – can you share 7-10 tracks we should listen to?

What a nice coincidence, spent my summer coming up with playlists of stuff I like to then share them with nice folks. I can sense your one of those. Name it.

    Hope you like them!
