    Q&A with Lou Doillon

    01 September 2019

    SFSC20: Q&A with Lou Doillon

Like French artistic royalty, Lou Doillon might be known to many as the stylish singer, actress and model daughter of Jane Birkin and writer and director Jacques Doillon. But to us, she is part of the So Frenchy So Chic family and a true artiste. Lou’s last performance at SFSC came just as she released her album Places which she performed with poetic perfection at SFSC that year. Having released her third album, Soliloquy in early 2019 to critical acclaim, she brings with her a multitude of new material, and we expect, even more heartfelt and poetic beauty. Ahead of the SFSC20, we sat down for a chat with the multi-disciplinary star

What most excites you about coming to Australia?

I discovered Australia on my last tour and was absolutely thrilled. The magic of the environment, the friendliness of the people and a very particular rhythm in the cities, somewhat relaxed, as opposed to Paris 😉

You’ve had a lovely relationship with So Frenchy So Chic (SFSC) over the years, what has been your favourite memory?

The day of our arrival, a few hours after we landed, the organizers of SFSC held a home greeting party. We were suddenly, after many hours of flight and unfriendly airports, in a backyard, having a barbecue! They merged us right into the pace, and it felt like a dream… And from there on, we just rolled in beauty and happiness… Everywhere we went, the audience was marvellously friendly and attentive. Such a treat.

What do you have planned for Australian audiences this time around?

The new show, for Soliloquy, is more Rock and Roll than what I’ve done before, there is something pagan in the energy, that hopefully frees the audience, as much as it frees me.

What are your simple pleasures in life?

Everything! My motto, that I remind people of at the end of the show, is ‘take pleasure everywhere’. I have learnt independence of pleasure 😉 I get a kick out of everything I set up to do, whether it’s writing a song, cooking for family, drawing, cleaning, reading… You can make anything be fun, if you decide it to be.

What is a rule that is meant to be broken?

The silly adage about ‘curiosity killing cats. For example, curiosity is the best thing in the world. Learn everything, it helps you understand, and that’s the root of empathy.

What is the biggest risk you’ve taken?

Believing in my instinct. I always have, always will. It’s turned out good sometimes, disastrous at others, but I can’t do anything for reasons that don’t attract me. I have said no to things, even my friends didn’t understand, but nevertheless, I need to be alone when I make a decision.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given (and who gave it to you)?

“Smile and the whole worlds smiles with you, cry and you cry alone”. My grandmother used to say this, and I think she was right.

SFSC is all about discovery, can you share three things you discovered lately?

I have discovered the marvellous author Maggie Nelson a couple of months ago; Victor Hugo, classics I had actually never read that blew my mind; and a wonderful artist on Instagram, Richey Beckett, that does marvellous posters for artists. I asked him to do one for this tour and am so proud of his work.

We’d love to know what’s on your summer playlist – can you share 7-10 tracks we should listen to?

    ‘Good God Damn’, Arcade Fire

    ‘One trick Ponies’, Kurt Vile

    ‘Stay’, Cat Power

    ‘Trafalgar Square’, Jonathan Wilson

    ‘Miami’, Baxter Dury

    ‘Mirror’, Safia Nolin

‘Each time you fall in Love’, Cigarettes after sex
